Fungi are great subjects to bring home for a closer look and a sketch. They don’t move about as quickly as the juncoes…

Deer Sketches
This buck came to the yard and offered some poses for my practice.
Buffleheads
American Wigeons
Band-Tailed Pigeon
I never see or hear this bird, but finding feathers is not uncommon where I walk. I also found a feather belonging to the Varied Thrush, a bird I do see everyday in winter.

November Flowers
It has been such a mild autumn with some flowers and pollinators still in the warm spots in the garden. Clocks turn back today and winter will suddenly feel much nearer.

Sightings of Spring
Frog Chorus
There is nothing more heartening than hearing the frogs begin their chorus. They sing even in chilly weather. It makes me want to bring them tiny blankets at night. Their singing is a sign that spring is indeed here. It has been a long winter for all of us.

Deer Studies
We have no fencing in our yard, so the deer often wander through, quite close to the house. I am trying to grasp how deer can look long and stretched and then compacted… seemingly in the same short movement!
Bleatings From the Hood
These are the neighbourhood goats. A family owns them, of course, they don’t run wild. They live down the road aways and can often be seen hanging out with the children in the yard. On occasion, their bleating can be heard from our deck. I think they get extra loud when they miss the girls or are waiting for their dinner…or both.
